# About Barestate

Computer use, grounded at the edge. Barestate Labs builds edge-first computer-use models: sub-50ms local ground truth, zero exfiltration, and actions executed through the OS accessibility layer.

## What we are making

- **Atom** — a 169 MB on-device grounding model that turns a screenshot and an instruction into a pixel-exact control target in under 50ms. Live in Barestate Orb on Apple Silicon — Metal-accelerated, returning OS accessibility bounding boxes.
- **Orbit** — our next computer-use model, in research preview. The goal is state-of-the-art screen understanding and action planning for work that spans apps, sources, and many steps. No public checkpoint or benchmark has been released. To request access, email vivek@barestate.xyz.

## How we think about the work

Routine computer use should progress toward a result, not ask for review after every step. Task authorization stays a distinct boundary: actions like sending, buying, publishing, or deleting remain separate decisions.

Private AI, our chat workspace, applies the same idea to prompts: inspect the exact request a provider would receive before anything is sent, with detected secrets becoming placeholders you approve first.

## Where things stand

Atom is live on Apple Silicon, macOS 14+. Orbit is in research preview. Published scores like 75.94% on ScreenSpot-v2 are Barestate frozen-baseline evaluations — inside the public top-20 range, not an official leaderboard listing. Methodology and sources: /research/atom-screenspot-v2.html.
